Phil Ochs is a loaded subject for me. I know of him through Jil Johnson (then 12), who adored him while I (then 13) adored her.
We saw him perform at Alice Tully Hall (Oh. It was his last concert). I have a copy of Pleasures of the Harbor and Tape From California. I may have some other Phil Ochs albums but these were the ones I listened to. I wore out Pleasures of the Harbor.
I saw a fellow at an open mike at the Turning Point (in Piermont or is it Nyak, New York) play a great early Phil Ochs song taught to him by his father, who was there.

Is flower lady on the pleasures of the harbour album? Phil Ochs achieved amazing songwriting heights. Of course he was incredibly gloomy and I can't imagine being that way unless you really relish it. I wish he wasn't affected by the lack of universal adoration. What did he expect?-- growing up with the Beatles and Dylan, probably a lot.

yes, Flower Lady is on that album. Seems his psychological problems were
pretty deep rooted- his father going crazy when Phil was just a kid
obviously had an impact. No doubt he inherited some of that chemical
imbalance - a combination of nature vs. nurture. Of course, everyone has
their obstacles to overcome, I guess his was the self destructive need to be
accepted. So he went and got a new nose while Dylan got a new name, we all
know who won there. Too bad with so much ground to cover, and with all his
knowledge, he didn't seem know that there was plenty of room for more than
one kind flower.

The Chemical Imbalance? I don't know. Oh well. A nose job? I must return to his material. I know, buy the cd! I already bought their sampler. Are they a company to whom I should be sending Pro-Choice on Mental Health?

Sorry for that obviously broad generalization on my part, I'm just going by
all I've read about him and what people said about him. Kramer told me Phil
Ochs was severely depressed and heavily drinking when he killed himself-I
thought that was somehow associated with a chemical imbalance, but what do I
know? Come to think of it, I doubt it's possible for anyone's chemicals to
be balanced. Now there's a weird thought. But I doubt he ever sang about his
nose, so I don't think you'd find anything about that in his music :)
although it sure would have been funny if he did, huh?
Thank you for buying the sampler...I'm very excited to hear it in its
entirety. This is the first comp album I've ever been on, and I'm a big fan
of some of the other folks who are on it, so for me it's really an honor.
Since doing the project and going thru Phil Ochs' songs and reading his
lyrics especially, I've learned so much more about him than I knew before,
so there's another treasure gained.
I honestly dont know much about the label, I hadn't heard anything about
wood records before. But I would say yes, send your stuff to them, couldn't
hurt, right? If you'd like, I'd be happy to pass along to you an email
address and name of one of the folks who runs it so you can touch base with
him before sending it out.

Phil Ochs, I was just thinking in the shower, Oh, Honey Pie, you are making me, well, back then was a sudden wave of 20's nostalgia and Phil took it on with Miranda and The Small Circle of Satire. His crucifixion experiment was over the top (someone else's mad production, lincoln mayorga???) my favorite is, and probably because it's such a great prelude to a suicide, Pleasures of the Harbor... mysterious lovecraft creatures are calling... He's got some amazing standards of counterculture songs from early albums that are basically solid melodic and distinctive. Those are probably the real treasure trove.
Tape from California, another memorable sad album, uh, When in Rome Do as the Romans do? It's a 15 minute folk ballad, meant to be pretty epoch. I have a song book of his from back then. He hosted events or participated in them at Wash Square.
I'd love to make contact with a wood records representative before sending my pink cd. Thanks. Yours truly, peter
